Conspiracy of Venus - St. Alban's Parrish Hall - April 21
Leading up to their second New York City tour this May, the all-women's vocal ensemble Conspiracy of Venus is offering a special event celebrating the poetry of Bertolt Brecht. The choir will premier a setting of Brechts poem "In Praise of Doubt, composed by Conspiracy of Venus director Joyce Todd McBride. The poem's opening lines: "Praised be doubt! I advise you to treat cheerfully and with respect the man who tests your word like a bad penny" presage the texts argument that doubt is healthy and that seemingly monolithic power structures are nevertheless susceptible to change. Doubt, Brecht adds, should never be an excuse to avoid necessary action.
The choir will also perform McBride's setting of Brecht's "The Buddha's Parable of the Burning House, along with signature renditions of favorites by The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, The Grateful Dead, and more!
Join us for a celebration in song as we continue our No Goddess Left Behind fundraising campaign, organized to ensure the choir arrives in NYC in full force. Snacks, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for sale. Ticket prices are sliding-scale. Please pay what you can. Donations of any size accepted. See you there!
